After two early seasons, in 1921 and 1922, operas came back to the Sferisterio arena in 1967, with a grand opening marked by Otello, with Mario Del Monaco. Since then, the world's greatest artists have walked on the Sferisterio stage, including Luciano Pavarotti, Katia Ricciarelli, Renato Bruson, Montserrat Caballé, Placido Domingo, Rudolf Nureyev, Carla Fracci and Roberto Bolle.
Several local productions have made history; among them the so-called Traviata of the Mirrors, created in 1992 by Josef Svoboda, or Ken Russel's unforgettable Bohème, first staged in 1984, and more recently Leo Muscato's Bohème, staged in 2012 and awarded the Abbiati prize for opera.
